KAREN

Gilbert was squeezing Karen's hand so hard that she feared he was going to crush the delicate bones, but he wasn't waking up, and she was afraid to pull her hand out of his grip and sever the connection.

"Gilbert! Wake up."

The nurse rushed in, but Karen stopped her with her other hand. "Wait. I think he's trying to open his eyes."

As Gilbert's eyelids fluttered, his grip on her hand slackened, and a long moment passed during which she was afraid to breathe. Then his beautiful eyes popped open, and he looked at her with such terror that tears misted her eyes.

"It's me, sweetie. Did you have a nightmare?"

He just kept staring at her with wide eyes.

"Bridget is on her way," Gertrude said from behind her. "I'll leave you alone. Call me if you need me."

Wasn't she supposed to check Gilbert's vitals?

"What's going on, love?" She leaned down closer and kissed his forehead. "What got you so scared?"

The kiss must have calmed him because he let out a breath. "Are we married?"

The poor guy must be delirious. "No, sweetie, we are not. But it doesn't matter. We are it for each other, forever and ever, right?"

"Would you marry me?"

"If it's important to you, sure."

"You can keep your last name. I know you don't want to give it up."

The tears that were just a mist before solidified, and she had to wipe them away with the back of her hand. "I know. We talked about that before. What's important right now is that you are awake."

Nodding, Gilbert licked his lips, and she realized that he must be thirsty. He was hooked up to an IV, so he was not dehydrated, and she'd kept his lips moist, but his throat probably felt dry.

"I'll get you some water." She walked over to the sink, got a paper cup, and filled it up.

The nurse had told her that the water was filtered, so it should be okay to give it to Gilbert. She found a straw, pulled it out of its paper cover, and stuck it in the cup.

When she got back to the bed, the door opened, and Bridget walked in.

"Welcome back." She got to Gilbert in three strides. "How are you feeling?"

"Thirsty," Karen said. "Can I give him water?"

"Yes. Just small sips, though."

As soon as the straw touched Gilbert's lips, he latched on to it and sucked down much more than small sips.

"That's enough," Bridget said. "If you can hold it down for a few more minutes, Karen will give you more."

Reluctantly, he let go.

Already, he looked much better than in the first panicky moments. The gleam in his eyes was back, and his facial muscles were relaxed.

"How long was I out?"

"You passed out Monday morning, and this is Thursday."

"Three days," Gilbert said. "That's not bad, right? Did I grow?"

Karen chuckled. "No, you didn't. There have been no physical changes yet."

He looked disappointed. "Nothing? Not even more hair?"

"It has been only three days," Bridget said. "And you are not out of the woods yet.
